NW Swift Fly-in Cottage Grove, OR 14-15 July 2018

From Kent Koester:

The NW Swift Fly-In will be held at Cottage Grove, Oregon this year co-hosted with Diamond Point Swifters. We have reserved use of the Oregon Aviation Historical Museum and their parking ramp, from which the Village Green Resort is just across the street. Or, if you like, camping on the grass “under the wing” is also available.

This year we plan a Cantina “party” at Sol Azteca (just down the street) followed by the late night movie, an Aerial Tour of local sights, a kayak trip down the Row river which flows around the airport, followed by the big Saturday night BBQ in the museum. Local pilot/craftsmen have been busy restoring old machinery and these will be on display with working demonstrations. Museum has a new, very enthusiastic manager and Cassandra is looking forward to showing off many new exhibits.

Weather in mid-July should be good with crisp temperatures in the morning until noon (good for flying, hiking through East Regional Park adjacent to the airport, or bicycling the Row River trail just a few blocks from the airport); afternoons heat up, sometimes into the nineties, and this is a good time to enjoy the river, the beach at Dorena lake, the swimming pool at the Village Green or maybe their lounge.

Village Green Reservations: The Village Green is holding a block of rooms for Swifters until June 12; rates for double occupancy are $109 standard and $129 deluxe. For reservations, call the hotel directly at 1-800-343-7666 and ask for “The Swift Fly-In event”.

Airport: 61S, paved runway, 122.8, non-standard pattern, fuel service now reliable plus we have the new Welcome Center for transient pilots.

Here is a view looking northwest taken from the wood paneled cabin of the Boeing Model 40 mail plane turning from right base onto final for R33 at Cottage Grove airport. Row river is flowing north (below the wing strut), then under the bridge and veers west through the nature park and then turns east at the base of R33 and flows up the east side of the airport. We launch the kayaks at the bridge. At the runway turn off, taxi west past the hangars and down to the Museum ramp. Village Green Resort is just across the street. Historic downtown Cottage Grove is off to the left side of photo.

More to follow, but this is a great fly-in and you should put on your calendars and plan to attend.
